Hidden Things is a round-up of recordings made by the Australian singer-songwriter that there was never quite room for on any of his previous four albums. As is generally the case with Kelly's records, the best and the worst thing about Hidden Things is Kelly's acute sense of place, which is to say that while many of his songs will ring brilliantly true to anyone with any understanding of Kelly's home country, any listener who has never been to Australia may well feel as bewildered as if listening to recitations of Icelandic folk sagas. There are few other cultures on earth that would countenance the writing of seven-and-a-half-minute songs about cricket players (as Kelly does on "Bradman") as a reasonable--never mind commercially viable--way to behave.
